the-4-phases-of-migraines-and-a-surprising-cureMigraines are a headache disorder that is most known for recurring head pain that ranges from moderate to severe. As much as 15% of the world population suffers from migraines. Reports of migraine symptoms have been found as far back as 1500 BCE. It is an ancient illness still causing people today much pain. People usually begin having them during adolescence, and they worsen in middle age. With women, they may become less common after menopause. If you have migraine, it's best to consult a migraine chiropractor in Sacramento as it can significantly affect the quality of your life.

The 4 Phases of Migraines

Migraines have four known phases, but not all four are always present. Let’s dig into each stage to help migraine sufferers understand what they may be going through before, during, and after a migraine attack.

1. Prodrome Phase

This is the stage before the onset of a migraine. About 60% of migraine sufferers experience prodromal or premonitory symptoms. These symptoms hit anywhere from two hours to two days before a migraine begins. It may or may not include an aura.

2. Aura Phase

An aura is a perceptual disturbance experienced by those suffering from migraines. It can be visual, sensory, or motor symptoms that occur slowly over a few minutes and last around an hour before the headache comes on.

Symptoms of Sensory Aura

3. Pain Phase

The headache is commonly felt on one side with an intensity that ranges from moderate to severe. However, in at least 40% of migraine cases, the pain is suffered on both sides and accompanied by neck pain. Bilateral pain is more prevalent in those who do not have an aura. Physical activity may worsen the headache.

Symptoms of Pain Phase

4. Postdrome Phase

This stage takes place after the headache has subsided. Many people report feeling “hung over” as the experience and symptoms are quite like the morning after you have had a long night of drinking. Some may feel very joyful and refreshed, while others fell down or depressed. This may change for the same person at different times.

Symptoms of Postdrome Phase:

The Conventional Way of Managing Migraines

The first thing physicians recommend is to take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or Tylenol (acetaminophen). They may also suggest medication to care for nausea that commonly goes along with migraines. If nausea and pain continue to persist, triptans or ergotamines will most likely be prescribed, possibly with caffeine. Other known medications that may be suggested are topiramate, valproate, and metoprolol. While these medications are sure to provide some relief and cover up the symptoms, migraines will likely return another day if the root cause of is not addressed.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Gives Hope to Migraine Sufferers

In many cases, the underlying cause of migraines is a misalignment in the bones of the upper cervical spine, specifically the atlas and axis vertebrae. What causes a misalignment in this area of the body? It can be due to minor or major trauma. Car accidents resulting in whiplash are often the source. Other trauma that causes a blow to the neck or head is also to be blamed, such as sports accidents or simply tripping and falling.

How does a misalignment in the upper cervical spine result in migraines?

A misalignment in this area can put tension on the brainstem, as they are in the same area of the neck. This means the brainstem can relay faulty signals to the brain. This can result in a migraine. Additionally, nerves and blood vessels can be negatively affected in the neck, also causing migraines.

Here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Sacramento, in California, we help our patients recover from their migraines by performing a light and precise method to realign the bones of the neck. This does not require forceful cracking of the spine or neck. Rather, it is a more natural approach to help the bones return to their proper position. Our method results in a longer-lasting adjustment. Once the correct alignment is achieved, migraine patients can enjoy positive results in as little as one or two adjustments.

Our migraine chiropractic clinic near Sacramento is always open for anyone with migraines or other chronic conditions. Schedule a consultation with us to start your healing journey!

are-headaches-caused-by-summer-heatHeadaches are among the most prevalent medical conditions, with nearly everyone having a headache at some point in their life. In fact, about 50 percent of adults worldwide have a headache in any given year, but they are not limited to a specific age, gender, or race. Headaches can be triggered by stress, emotional trauma, or a medical condition, like high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression, according to the World Health Organization. Another unique trigger for some people seems to be connected to summer heat, but is the heat what is causing the headaches?

Heat Headaches

The summer heat can be the cause of a number of different physical trials, but are headaches among them? One Baylor College of Medicine expert has stated that headache onset during summer months could actually be due to dehydration.

How are headaches and dehydration connected? When the body does not have sufficient fluids, the blood vessels in your body narrow as you lose water and electrolytes. This makes you more vulnerable to heat stroke as well as headache symptoms, high body temperature, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, and nausea. For anyone who is prone to suffering from headaches and migraines, heat and dehydration can easily be a trigger, according to Dr. Doris Kung, assistant professor of neurology at Baylor. She recommends drinking plenty of water before and during any time spent outside in the sun. It’s also a good idea to take frequent breaks from strenuous activity.

She warns against ignoring headaches when they reoccur or are joined with feelings of weakness, numbness, slurred speech, or an altered mental state. This could indicate of a much more serious issue. If the headaches become more severe or frequent, it is best to seek out the help of your primary care physician.

Another important warning to heed is regarding over-the-counter medications that temporarily relieve symptoms, but when taken too frequently, can actually cause headache pain to increase. This type of headache is called a rebound headache, and it can be worse than a migraine.  Pain medication being used for headaches at least 15 days per month can result in rebound headaches.

A few ways you can lower your susceptibility to headaches is to consistently drink fluids, get adequate amounts of sleep, identify your triggers and avoid them, exercise regularly, and eating nutrient-dense foods as much as possible.

10 Causes of Headaches

Here are 10 of the most common reasons that headaches happen.

  1. Anxiety: Stress is one of the top causes of headaches. Managing stress is one of the best steps toward preventing headache onset. Relaxation activities such as taking walks, massage, taking a hot bath, and reading an enjoyable book are all excellent options.
  2. Glare: You can get a headache from time on a computer screen, the sun, overhead lights, or bright car lights at night. Taking breaks from the computer, wearing sunglasses, and using a desk lamp instead of overhead lights may help.
  3. Noise: Noises that can cause your head to ache include loud, repetitive noise and continuous noise at a low level. For this issue, listening to calm music and headphones may be helpful.
  4. Bad sleeping and eating patterns: Being out of rhythm with your food and sleeping needs can lead to headaches very easily, as the body needs adequate amounts of rest and nutrients to function properly. Staying consistent with each of these can help keep headaches at bay.
  5. Medication: There are several medications that list headaches as a side effect. Read the labels on your medications and check with your doctor.
  6. Physical exertion: Surprisingly, an intense workout can make the blood vessels in your head, neck, and scalp swell, which can result in a headache.
  7. Not enough physical activity: A sedentary lifestyle is not good for anybody. Regular movement and activity lowers your risk for headaches and affects your overall sense of well-being.
  8. Improper posture: Using proper posture by sitting up allows the blood to flow to the head and positively affects your neck and spine.
  9. Fluctuating hormones: Estrogen levels drop right before menstruation, which can lead to a headache.
  10. Food sensitivities: Some foods and drinks release neurotransmitters that can trigger headaches. A few of these are aspartame, MSG, chocolate, alcohol, cheese, and red wine.

Natural Relief for Headaches

Finding a lasting, entirely positive solution for headaches can be frustrating. However, the results of a study conducted by Dr. Erin Elster, an upper cervical chiropractor and researcher, could shed light on a beneficial treatment option.

The research was based on 101 patients who had a variety of headache types. Out of the 101 patients, 87 of them recalled some history of head or neck trauma prior to having headache problems. After examining each of them, the chiropractors found a misalignment in the top bones of the neck, either the C1 (atlas) or C2 (axis), in every one of the patients. The patients were all provided treatment from an upper cervical chiropractor. Of the 101 people, 85 reported that their headaches were completely gone in only 1 to 8 months of care. Nearly all (97 patients out of 101) experienced dramatic improvements in their headache symptoms.

Why does Sacramento, CA upper cervical chiropractic have this effect on headaches? The reason is that the brainstem is located within the atlas and axis, and any misalignment of these bones places pressure on the brainstem. This can cause distorted messages to be relayed to and from the brain. Another issue that occurs when these bones are improperly aligned is it can interfere with the flow of oxygen-rich blood and cerebrospinal fluid from circulating to and from the brain. All these problems contribute to headaches.

Here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Sacramento, we apply a gentle technique, unique in the chiropractic field. Our technique encourages the bones to realign without the need for popping or cracking of the spine. These corrections have benefited numerous patients, many of whom have experienced drastic improvements to their symptoms or the elimination of headaches altogether.

the-many-faces-of-a-migraine-episode-and-a-ray-of-hope-for-reliefA migraine episode is actually a neurological condition that causes a variety of symptoms.  Affecting over 1 billion people worldwide, migraine is the 3rd most prevalent illness across the globe.  Most migraine sufferers have one or two episodes a month, but over 4 million experience migraines on a more chronic basis with over 15 migraine days on a monthly basis.  A migraine is more than just a bad headache, as any migraine chiropractor in Sacramento will tell you, it can unfold in distinct phases that bring with them their own subset of symptoms.

The Most Common Migraine Symptoms by Phase

Signs and symptoms of a migraine episode can begin a day or two before the onset of the headache itself.  What many migraine-free people may not understand about the condition is that it unfolds in phases and that each phase has its own subset of symptoms:

Phase 1 – Prodrome Symptoms

The prodrome phase, sometimes called the pre-headache phase, affects between 30% and 40% of migraine sufferers.  For those who do experience it, the prodrome phase serves as a type of warning that an attack is coming. Prodrome symptoms include:

Phase 2 – Aura Symptoms

When people think about a migraine episode, the aura phase is the one that might come up most often.  However, only about a quarter of migraine sufferers will experience it. A migraine aura might allow those who do experience it catch an episode early enough before it progresses into the headache phase.  Possible aura symptoms include:

Phase 3 – Headache Symptoms

The actual headache of a migraine episode is easily the most notorious symptom.  The trigeminal nerve becomes inflamed, causing much of the pain of the third migraine phase.  During the headache phase, other symptoms can arise as well:

Phase 4 – Postdrome Symptoms

The postdrome phase is the classic migraine "hangover" phase.  These symptoms can last for a few hours up to a few days following a more severe episode.  Postdrome symptoms commonly include:

Making Sense of Migraines

If you cope with migraines, whether they be infrequent or chronic, then odds are you're looking for ways to deal with the pain and prevent future episodes from arising.  Upper cervical chiropractic care has been providing migraine sufferers with a natural, lasting solution when it comes to managing their condition. We do this with a unique focus on aligning the uppermost vertebrae in the spine (the upper cervical area).  A misalignment of the top vertebra in the neck has been implicated as the root cause of many migraine patients' ongoing condition and has also been the source of much relief once corrected.

Your atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae have some important jobs:

Because of these important functions, the bones of the upper cervical spine are shaped very differently from the others in the spinal column.  This leaves them more vulnerable to misaligning after an accident or injury, or simply due to wear and tear over time. When a misalignment occurs, it can cause irritation to the brainstem (where the trigeminal nerve originates) and can cause muscle tension and spasm in the neck (a very common migraine symptom).  This can lead to the development of migraines and many of the other phase-based symptoms we discussed above.

The encouraging part is that upper cervical chiropractic care is designed to restore normal alignment, allowing the body to naturally return to a normal state of function.  Because of how individual an atlas misalignment can be, we take great care to provide customized care for each of our patients. Upper cervical adjustments themselves are very precise, which allows them to be performed in a much gentler manner without the need for a great deal of force.  Specifically delivered corrections lead to longer-lasting results than more general adjustments do, giving sufferers the lasting Sacramento migraine relief they need.

If you suffer from this neurological disorder, rest assured that you are not alone. As many as 10% of the population has migraines, with 18% of these being women and many of which are keen on visiting a migraine chiropractic clinic near Sacramento. Migraines generally occur in the age range of 25 to 55, although they can affect anyone at any age. There are various medications available to help care for migraines. However, many people find them ineffective or filled with undesirable side effects. Thankfully, new research is revealing an alternative way to care for migraines that does not involve medication. It has proven to be effective for many migraine sufferers. Let’s take a look at what some methods of care involve and a final solution that can ease up migraines long term.

Ways to Combat Migraine Pain

Rest after stress: Most of us know that worry can cause a headache or a migraine to occur. But, did you also realize the relief after coping with a stressful situation can cause migraines? This information comes from the Yeshiva University in New York after they discovered a drop in cortisol and other stress-related hormones can bring about head pain. Therefore, if you are coming out of a stressful situation, it is wise to take all the precautions you would if you suspect a migraine is coming on. Things such as getting some sleep, eating properly, mild physical exercise, and practicing relaxation techniques can all be beneficial for the nervous system to function properly. You may want to include cognitive behavioral therapy, guided visual imagery, or just closing your eyes for 30 seconds and focusing on your breathing.

Telling others about your pain: Researchers at the University of Michigan analyzed 21,741 tweets about migraines. Out of these, 65% of those tweeting were having a migraine at the time as the message was sent. They discovered that just expressing your feelings about migraines and the pain you are enduring can relieve some of the symptoms. Study author, Alexandre DaSilva, stated that neuroimaging studies suggest cognitive and emotional areas of the brain can control some of the activity related to physical pain. Therefore, talking about your migraines on social media may actually provide a measure of relief beyond expressing your emotions.

Over caring for migraines: Some doctors begin by sending their migraine patients off for expensive and unnecessary testing, such as MRIs and CT scans. A study in Boston at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital revealed that 12 million Americans are needlessly tested when suffering with migraines. Study author, John N. Mafi, said clinical guidelines for migraines recommend doctors educate their patients on lifestyle modifications before sending them for these additional tests which usually do not reveal anything vital. Being healthy, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and regularly exercising are important to helping migraines. It is also highly recommended to keep a migraine diary. Keeping track of what you were doing, the foods you ate, the weather conditions, and how you were feeling before a migraine attack can help you identify your personal triggers and avoid them.

Biofeedback:  This allows you to use information or feedback about your skin temperature, brain waves, muscle tension, and other signals within the body to help reduce your stress. Information is gathered through the use of electrodes – small metal sensors – placed on your skin. The machine they are attached to show data as numbers, sounds, or electrical waves on the screen. Studies have revealed that during a migraine, blood flow in the brain changes. By using biofeedback, you can actually change the flow of blood to the brain in order to have more control over a headache.

Acupuncture: This is an ancient Chinese method in which very fine needles are placed into different areas on the body. It is used to help correct energy imbalances and helps the body better fight off illnesses. Studies show that acupuncture may help the body release pain-blocking chemicals, such as endorphins. The brain may also be stimulated to give off other chemicals and hormones that encourage the body to be healthier.

Herbs: There are a number of different herbs that may be suggested for migraines. Most studies have looked at butterbur and feverfew. Feverfew is the most popular herbal remedy when it comes to migraine relief. Studies have shown that it is helpful, but more research is needed to actually prove this. It is important to talk to your doctor before trying any type of herb or supplement to be sure it is safe for you and won’t interact with any medications you are currently taking.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Migraines

One of the most effective natural remedies for migraines is upper cervical chiropractic care. A study was done of 101 migraine patients. Upon examination, it was discovered that they all had a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck. Each of these patients was given an adjustment tailored to their specific needs by an upper cervical chiropractor. The result? They all saw improvement in their migraine pain, while some of them saw their migraines go away and not return.

Here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Sacramento, we use a method similar to that used in the above-mentioned study. It is gentle and does not require us to pop or crack the neck to realign the displaced bones. It is based on scientific measurements and helps the bones move back into place naturally. This results in a longer-lasting adjustment and Sacramento vertigo relief. Our patients have reported similar results to those in the study mentioned above.

Migraines Linked to Spinal Misalignments

There has been a connection established between migraines and a misaligned bone in the upper neck. The top bone of the neck, the atlas or C1 vertebra, is known for misaligning due to low-impact blows to the head or neck – car accidents, sporting injuries, or a simple trip and fall. If the atlas moves out of place, the brainstem is put under pressure, and it may send improper signals to the brain, leading to facial pain, muscle spasms, and additional migraine symptoms.

Here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Sacramento in Sacramento, our migraine chiropractor in Sacramento offers our patients a gentle yet effective way to care for migraines. The technique is precise and is personalized for each one of our patients. Rather than popping or cracking the spine, we employ a method that allows the bones to move back into place naturally. This reduces the pressure being placed on the spinal cord and helps restore proper communication throughout the body. This often leads to a reduction or even a resolution of migraines in as little as  one or two adjustments.

Common Care for Migraines

Migraines are difficult to care for as they are as individual as the person coping with them. No one really understands why migraines occur. Those having migraines are looking for fast answers to the intense pain in their heads. Often, the easiest thing to do is grab the nearest pain medication. Many are beginning to look for more natural approaches, however.

A Natural Way to Cope with Migraines

A problem with the function of the brainstem seems to be a frequently overlooked reason that migraines happen. Migraines are neurological in origin. When a misalignment has occurred in the bones of the top part of the spine, the brainstem is put under stress, potentially causing it to malfunction.

A Sacramento upper cervical chiropractor is specifically trained to find these misalignments and then work to correct them. A gentle approach is used, omitting the need to pop or crack the spine. When pressure is relieved from the brainstem, the body is able to communicate and function at a higher level. This can be effective in relieving and even eliminating migraines in some cases, often in as little as one or two visits.

Family physicians often have a hard time finding appropriate relief for their patients. Each migraine is as unique as the person suffering from it. A variety of pain medications and other options exist, but finding the one that works for each person can be difficult. Some doctors may recommend:

What Causes Migraines?

The exact cause of migraines is still under much debate. Researchers understand how they happen, just not why. The parts of the body that are involved when a migraine occurs are the brain, the muscles, and the vascular and nervous systems.

New research is constantly being done to find answers for migraine sufferers. One area that is being looked at is the effect of vasodilators on rats and how this can help humans dealing with head pain. Issues with the flow of blood to the brain are one cause of migraines, and by injecting vasodilators into the blood stream, blood flow to the brain is increased.

While this has produced some positive results in animals, the effect on humans has not been tested yet. The drug is still in experimental stages. However, some have been able to find similar promising results using an all-natural way to cope with migraines.

Fighting an Unknown Enemy

One of the tough things about dealing with silent migraines can be finding the right care when you are not even sure what is wrong. However, it is important to note that many of the symptoms above can go back to the same problem.

A stiff neck or sore jaw can be signs of an upper cervical misalignment. The C1 vertebra (atlas) can affect the brainstem when not in proper alignment. It can also block proper cerebrospinal fluid drainage. These factors can lead to migraines, both those with severe head pain and those without.

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefRebound headaches are becoming ever more common in the pharmaceutical era. The fact is that just about every condition today is treated with some kind of medication. Many of these over-the-counter or prescription drugs do nothing more than cover over the symptoms of a condition. As a result, they need to be taken again and again. Headache medications are the classic example of this scenario.

Why Headache Medication Is So Common

The fact is that there is no miracle drug that stops headaches from occurring. Therefore, a person with chronic headaches (15 or more days per month) will have to take pills on a regular basis to deal with the pain. Therein lies the problem. Medication overuse has created a vicious cycle involving rebound headaches.

What Is a Rebound Headache?

A rebound headache is a headache that is caused by the overuse of pain relievers (either prescription or over-the-counter). Sometimes, instead of using fewer pain relievers, a person is encouraged to switch pain medications when rebound headaches start to occur. This results in a constant cycle of switching to a new pain medication every time the medication overuse headaches begin. This only serves to perpetuate the problem.

A Natural and Better Solution

If you are ready to break the cycle of rebound headaches, we encourage you to look into upper cervical chiropractic care. This gentle and specific form of chiropractic does not involve popping or twisting of the spine. It is a low force correction of the upper neck that provides a long lasting adjustment, thereby giving the body time to heal.

As damage from an upper cervical misalignment is repaired, the brainstem can function optimally. Proper blood flow to the brain and cerebrospinal fluid drainage can be restored. Correcting these underlying problems has helped many to break away from pain medication altogether. For example, a collection of 101 case studies reveals the benefits of upper cervical care for headache patients with many patients in the study seeing complete resolution of headaches.

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefHeadaches are becoming commonplace for children. According to one children’s hospital, headaches affect over 40% of children under 7, and 75% of kids have their first headache by age 15. While migraines are far less common in children (only about 3%) a common headache is experienced by almost everyone. Why is this the case? What can help with headaches?

Headache Causes

While the underlying cause of headaches, in general, is still not completely understood, researchers recognize that many different factors play into headache occurrence. A few of the most common ideas include:

These are just a few of the factors that headaches get attributed to. What can’t be argued is what headaches result in. For many, especially children, chronic headaches can lead to depression and general behavioral issues.

Looking to the Neck for Help

Most parents are not interested in pumping their kids full of medications, prescription or not. While you want to stop the pain, it’s always a good idea to also search for long-term assistance that can reduce headache occurrence rather than just waiting until the next one crops up and popping another pill.

Interestingly, a misalignment of the atlas (C1 vertebrae) can lead to many of the underlying headache issues noted above. A misaligned neck can cause muscle strain. It can also put pressure on the brainstem, potentially affecting neurochemistry. The blood vessels could also be affected as the misalignment may be preventing proper drainage.

Even if the child has not suffered head or neck trauma (a car accident, a fall on the playground, etc.), the birth process itself could have led to an upper cervical misalignment. The headaches may just be a symptom of an issue that has existed since day one.
