Sciatica, Sciatic Nerve, Back Pain, Back AcheThere is a very simple first step you can take to begin improving your back pain right away. It is so simple that you can do it in your sleep. That is because it has to do with the way you sleep. The position you are sleeping in has a lot to do with how your back feels both when you get up and throughout the day.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position?

First, let’s talk about what position you should not sleep in. Sleeping on your stomach is not good for your posture, back, or neck. Sleeping on your side is better than sleeping on your stomach. If you do have back problems, be sure to put a pillow between your knees when you plan to sleep on your side. This eases any pressure on the lower back. The preferred way to sleep for maximum health benefit is to sleep lying on your back. If this is too uncomfortable because of your back pain, sleeping on your side is acceptable.

What Else can Help?

Regular exercise can help alleviate some back pain. Have you heard the saying: The life not lived is not worth living? This can apply to having exercise as part of your daily routine. Research shows that sitting most of the time can cause lower back pain. However, exercise reduces the chance that you will get back pain and also helps to alleviate it in those that already suffer from it. So, make it a goal to get out and do something fun. For example, take a walk, do some Pilates, go swimming, or take an exercise class. Do what makes you feel good and, in turn, it will make your back feel better.

It is also a good idea to have a support team made up of the people you are around on a regular basis. These people can help you to keep motivated. This is very important to your recovery.

What Is the Next Step?

Next, we highly recommend that you entrust the care of your lower back to an upper cervical chiropractor, such as Dr. Brett Gottlieb of Fair Oaks, California. Dr. Gottlieb will examine the upper two bones in your neck to see if there is a misalignment. If so, correcting that will help to alleviate pain in the lower back. This is a huge step in your recovery.

How is my neck causing my low back pain?

When the top bone in the neck (atlas) misaligns, it causes tension in your spinal cord. This tension causes the signals in your spinal cord to become distorted. When improper signals are sent to and from your brain, it can potentially cause pain, muscle tension, and posture imbalance. One of the ways it can create low back pain and sciatica is due to increased muscle tension on one side of the body. This can cause one hip to be higher than the other, making the length of one leg slightly shorter than the other.

A Gentle Option

Dr. Gottlieb is trained in NUCCA and QSM3. These are gentle chiropractic techniques aimed at reducing atlas misalignments. It is incredibly specific to each individual patient. Through realignment of the atlas, tension on the spinal cord is reduced. This may lead to a reduction in pain, muscle spasms, and postural distortion. The hips may level out after a correction, potentially leading to a reduction of pressure on the low back.

Chung et al. reported a case of a male patient who presented with sciatica. He was found to have an atlas misalignment. While under NUCCA care, he noticed a reduction in his sciatica symptoms. (2)

Sciatica, Sciatic Nerve, Back Pain, Back AcheSciatica, or pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, can range from a minor annoyance to a very severe pain.  The sciatic nerve has its origins in the lower back, and travels through the hip area, buttocks, and down the back each leg (though sciatic nerve pain usually only affects one side of the body).  Sciatica can occur when, for one reason or another, the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or pinched.  This typically occurs as a result of a herniated disc or a bone spur.

Much research has been released lately about the risks associated with sitting too much.  Sitting for long periods of time has been linked with a number of health concerns, including elevated blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and excess body fat.  Prolonged sitting can also contribute to sciatic pain for a number of reasons.  Sitting in a chair shifts more weight onto the discs of the spine in the lower back, which can aggravate the sciatic nerve.  Sitting for extended periods of time also encourages poor posture in the neck, which in turn affects the spine lower down.  Carrying the head off-center or off-level can create imbalances that can travel down the length of the spine, causing pain and discomfort.

While it may seem counterintuitive or strange to look at the neck as the source of sciatic pain, often the primary issue can be found there.  The spine is all connected through a network of joints, muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues.  When one of the top two vertebrae in the neck shift out of alignment, it causes many compensations and abnormal muscle tension throughout the body.  So, while the symptoms you may be feeling are in the lower back, the origin of the problem may very well be in the neck.

In his Fair Oaks Upper Cervical Chiropractic practice, Dr. Brett Gottlieb performs a thorough analysis to determine if a misalignment in the upper part of the neck is, in fact, to blame for your sciatic pain.  Once this misalignment is corrected, and the body is allowed to regain its normal posture and function, sciatic pain can be relieved naturally.
