Migraines, Headaches, Migraine, Headache, Migraine ReliefMigraines are no small thing as anyone who suffers from them can attest. Migraines are considered to be one of the most prominent health conditions globally. In the United States, 12% of the population succumb to at least one attack per year. For women, it is 3x as likely. Migraines account for 113 million sick days per year totaling a financial loss of $13 billion according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Some people are unfortunate enough to have chronic migraines, which means 15 or more monthly.

The big question in healthcare isn’t how they happen but what to do about it. It is well documented in medical literature that the major systems involved with migraines are the brain, nerves/nervous system, and blood flow. Research is also showing the possibility of genetics related to migraines. What can be done? Treatments vary greatly, but typically NSAID’s (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) are the most common course of action. There are many drug companies racing to find a “cure” as it would mean big business, but there is nothing conclusive. Migraines are as unique as the individual, requiring careful diagnosis and treatment.

Some healthcare providers are starting to take a natural approach to migraines. Migraine specialist Dr. Brett Gottlieb is taking an approach where less is more, much more. As an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, Dr. Gottlieb gives each patient special attention. Dr. Gottlieb helps patients by ensuring the proper position of the atlas bone which is the top bone in the neck. The atlas bone is very important to the optimal function of the body as it has implications for the brain, nervous system, and blood flow, all of which are key factors in resolving migraines.

By taking a careful look at each patient and formulating a customized plan, he is able to correct the misalignment of the atlas bone. Clinical studies have shown that migraine patients receiving Upper Cervical Chiropractic have improved in as little as one adjustment.1

There are several different types of headaches, and migraines are often confused as one and the same thing, but there are some that are worse than others.

The most painful type of a headache is known as a cluster headache and nicknamed the Suicide Headache. According to The Migraine Trust, it is estimated that 1-2 in 1000 people suffer from this type of debilitating headache.1 A cluster headache is characterized by these symptoms:

Anyone with cluster headaches can attest to how bad they can affect daily living. NFL football player Terrance Knighton (aka Pot Roast) describes them as living in a personal “hell.” You have to be tough to play nose tackle in the NFL like Knighton does, but even this 355-pound man says, “On a scale of one to 10, the pain is a 50.”2 Recently, he was affected so badly, he missed a key game in November. He has been to 20-30 doctors since the headaches began in the 5th grade, and he hopes for a cure to come soon.

Many people in the Fair Oaks area are looking for a more natural treatment that does not involve powerful drugs or invasive surgery. Headache specialist, Dr. Brett Gottlieb, helps his patients accomplish relief naturally from headaches in Sacramento as an upper cervical chiropractor.

It is proven through research that headaches are related to the atlas bone (C1 vertebrae) and central nervous system. Patients who suffer from headaches may have a misalignment in the upper neck that affects the brain and body’s ability to function. It has been scientifically proven that, in a review of 100 patients with headaches under upper cervical chiropractic care, that a misalignment was present at the atlas, and when specifically corrected, headaches were reduced, and quality of life improved.3

Migraines, Headaches, Natural ReliefMigraines are a condition that is characterized by pulsing and throbbing in the head. It is estimated that 36 million Americans suffer from migraines. As many as 18 million Americans have chronic migraines, which would be 5 or more migraines monthly. Migraines may last for only a few hours or several days, and many people accept this as part of daily living.

Migraines are a challenging condition to treat as they are as unique as the individual who has them. This makes it very hard for patients and doctors alike. The market for drug treatments is constantly expanding. In this day and age, many people are no longer looking for a pill to cover up the symptoms and want a natural solution for migraines.

One of the latest crazes involves something known as the Daith piercing, a piercing of the cartilage in the inner ear lobe. Social media is abuzz with people posting their piercing, claiming migraine relief as a result. The proposed mechanism of migraine relief is that the section of the ear that is pierced is the same as the trigger point for migraines in acupuncture. Acupuncture works by inserting needles at specific points to allow proper flow of Qi. Acupuncture is somewhat controversial but is known to help some conditions as it has an effect on the nervous system. There are no studies done yet to prove or disprove this, and some doctors are wary to recommend it as a migraine treatment.1 Meanwhile, other natural methods are showing more promise in clinical studies.

When a Person Suffers Connective Tissue Damage

Whiplash, Neck Trauma, Neck Injury, Migraines, HeadachesDo you think your migraines are connected to a recent injury, or perhaps one in your past? You are probably right, especially if the accident or injury resulted in whiplash. Whiplash is usually treated with pain medication, but that doesn’t fix the underlying damage to connective tissue or the degeneration that occurs as a result. Consider the importance of connective tissue.

What Connective Tissue Does

How Your Spine Is Affected

Supporting the spine is one of the most important functions of connective tissue. When that tissue is damaged (by whiplash, for example), the spine can start to degenerate. This causes particular issues when a misalignment occurs in the top two vertebrae. Just ¼ millimeter of misalignment can result in decreased flow of blood and cerebrospinal fluid to the brainstem. Migraines can occur as a result.

How can you restore proper nervous and vascular system function? An upper cervical chiropractor, like Dr. Brett Gottlieb from Fair Oaks, California, can examine your C1 and C2 vertebrae to determine if a misalignment exists and its extent. Then a personalized adjustment schedule can be set up to restore proper alignment. Once the C1 and C2 are back in place, you body can take it from there.

Many find that their migraines improve with just a few adjustments and that complete resolution of migraines is the ultimate result. You probably agree that this is a much better prognosis than simply treating migraines with pain medication as they occur.

Migraines, Headaches, Natural ReliefMigraines afflict 1 in 8 people. The best way to cope with such a major health problem is through education about treatment options. Migraines affect a person’s home life and work productivity. Treatment is sought, and side effects are often accepted as a necessary evil. However, some migraine treatments may actually be perpetuating the problem.

The issue is that many pain relievers used to treat migraines can ultimately cause Medication Overuse Headaches. When certain over-the-counter medications are taken several times each week, they can cause rebound headaches. In the end, the treatment is keeping the underlying problem from going away.

A Solution to the Pain-Killer Cycle

The bigger problem is that the use of pain medication is merely an attempt to cover the symptoms of a migraine rather than an actual solution to this debilitating health condition. Dr. Brett Gottlieb, an upper cervical chiropractor in Sacramento, California, is helping migraine sufferers to get natural relief without medication.

Migraines are often caused by a misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae that can create pressure on the brainstem and block proper blood flow. If an examination shows that an upper cervical misalignment may be causing your migraines, Dr. Gottlieb can develop an alignment program to provide relief. For many, upper cervical adjustments have provided great relief and even eliminated migraines altogether. 1

Natural relief of migraines in Sacramento California

If you are living with the devastating pain of migraines, you're more than likely dealing with the usual debilitating symptoms that include nausea, extreme sensitivity to sound or light, vomiting and intense pain. Some migraine sufferers also experience weird visual disturbances that some describe as what looks like electrical bolts of color (auras), a tingling or numbing feeling, having difficulty speaking and clumsiness, and the attacks typically last between 4 to 72 hours. The standard medical treatments for migraines usually consist of a combination of prescription and over the counter drugs that are usually far from effective and don’t treat the root cause. In addition, most of these drugs come with a long list of potentially dangerous side effects.

If migraine headaches were a form of entertainment, they'd be a really bad broadway musical. You know the kind you read poor reviews about, cringe during the musical performances, and can't seem to get the songs out of your head. Migraine Headaches don't always but sometimes happen in phases. Those phases can start up to 24 hours before the headache begins and last for days after the actual headache.

Migraine Headache Stages

Prodrome Phase – These are symptoms that occur before the headache and only effects 60% of sufferers. This stage can start anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days before the Aura stage. Symptoms may include altered mood, irritability, depression and euphoria, fatigue, stiff muscles, food cravings, constipation or diarrhea, or sensitivity to smells or noise.

Aura Phase – This is a transient neurological phenomenon that happens during or just before a migraine occurs, begins gradually, and usually lasts less than 60 minutes. This only affects a little more than a third of Migraine sufferers. People who have migraines with aura may experience partial blindness, zigzag lines, blurring, a sensation of pins and needles, numbness and tingling, speech difficulty, dizziness, hallucinations, or loss of motor function.

Pain Phase – This is the stage of the actual headache, and it also usually begins gradually. The pain can be moderate to severe, but physical activity can worsen the pain. Those who do not go through the aura stage before or during this stage commonly experience neck pain. This stage lasts anywhere from four to 72 hours.

Postdrome Phase – When a migraines ends, the effects may linger. Symptoms during this stage may include soreness where the headaches occurred, impaired thinking, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, mood changes, and weakness.
