Migraines Without the Headache—Diagnosis and Care

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefMigraines that do not present with a headache, sometimes called silent migraines, are often misdiagnosed. For example, up to 40% of migraines present with vertigo. However, vertigo may be a sign of a migraine even if there is no headache present. In fact, many migraine patients are now presenting with aura but no headache. What are the other symptoms of this neurological condition besides the severe headache that most associate it with?

Symptoms of a Migraine

If one does not get headaches, it is necessary to identify other migraine symptoms in order to get the right diagnosis. Here are a few things to look for:

  • Sensitivity to lights, sounds, or smells
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Aura (visual disturbances, hallucinations, sensory sensitivity, etc.)
  • Stiff neck
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness
  • Stuffy nose
  • Confusion
  • Sore jaw
  • Upset stomach

This is by no means a comprehensive list of migraine symptoms.

Fighting an Unknown Enemy

One of the tough things about dealing with silent migraines can be finding the right care when you are not even sure what is wrong. However, it is important to note that many of the symptoms above can go back to the same problem.

A stiff neck or sore jaw can be signs of an upper cervical misalignment. The C1 vertebra (atlas) can affect the brainstem when not in proper alignment. It can also block proper cerebrospinal fluid drainage. These factors can lead to migraines, both those with severe head pain and those without.
